In early 2015, guitarist Chris Luquette approached us looking for an instrument that would deliver an identifiable sound, a sound that would have the potential to be the musical signature for Chris and his particular style of playing. The guitar Chris was looking for had to have the power and dynamic range to be responsive to the range of his music. He needed an instrument for flat picking and rhythm to fill the role of guitarist for Grammy nominated Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, plus a guitar that could expand into jazz and the beautiful solo arrangements he is known for. In addition to the outstanding tone, we wanted to create a visually stunning instrument incorporating the best features of our vintage traditions, while at the same time, a fresh and sophisticated look. Working closely with Chris, we believe we hit the target.
The D-BA CRL is constructed with an Adirondack top with our limited edition ‘Shipwreck’ Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. (Other Rosewoods are also available). The CRL features a hand graduated and thicknesses top, advanced X bracing with pre-war scalloped braces. The neck on this model is slightly more V shaped then our standard soft V profile. The beautiful amber sunburst sets off the paua abalone rosette as does the herringbone top purling. The fingerboard on the CRL model is absent of position markers (there are side position dots) and it is bound to match the body in rich grained ivoroid. The headstock is also bound in ivoroid and the Waverly open back tuners are accented with ivoroid buttons. This guitar comes equipped with the LR Baggs Lyric acoustic mic pickup system.
The Thompson D-BA CRL Model has many features that serious guitarist look for; beauty, playability and superb tone.
